What exactly is an Ebook?

Put simply, ebooks are electronic books that can be read on a computer screen or printed out to paper. Ebooks come in the form of simple programs that you can download and store on your PC.
Ebooks offer a high level of interactivity not possible in print editions. This makes ebooks the perfect medium for 'step by step' guides, 'how to' guides and so on, because you can immediately connect to additional information or resources at exactly the moment you need them.

Do I need any special software?

Some of the ebooks you'll find online require that you download and install special 'reader' software.
Some ebboks require No special softwares & they work fine with windows. But on Android You need a book reading free software available in Market. eg. Aldiko, Magic Wand etc. Same way for IPad search for IBOOKS its a free software available in app store.

How do I download and read your ebooks?

Click the download link for the ebook in question. This will launch the Windows 'Save as...' dialog box. Select a folder (directory) on your PC/MOBILE to save the ebook in (e.g. My Documents, Download HD). Once the ebook is downloaded, open the folder where you saved the ebook and double-click the icon to start reading.

How long does it take to download an ebook?

The speed of the download depends largely on the size of the ebook in question and the speed of your Internet connection. Typically, the download should take between 1 and 6 minutes.

Can I read EPUB files on my Kindle?

Kindle does not natively read EPUB files. However, EPUB files can be converted into .mobi files which can be read by a Kindle. Do an internet search for "convert EPUB to mobi" to find conversion software that can be run on a PC or from the web.

Q: What’s the difference between eBook format and ePub format?

An eBook is any electronic version of a book. PDFs, ePub formatting and Kindle design books are all eBooks. ePub formatting is the most popular open standard for eBooks. It can be read on many devices including the new iPad. Other formats, like Amazon’s Kindle, can only be read on their own devices.

 How do I use an EPUB file?

Reading EPUB files in Aldiko on an Android device

To download our EPUB files to Aldiko:
Install the Aldiko application on the Android device
On your PC, download an EPUB from cnx.org
How to download an EPUB
Connect the Android device to your PC
Drag the EPUB file to the SD card on the Android device in this location: ebooks/import
Open Aldiko
Press the Menu button on your device and select the "Import" option.
Alkido will import the EPUB.
The EPUB will be available on your bookshelf.

Install the Stanza application
Open Safari
Navigate to cnx.org and download an EPUB
How to download an EPUB
A window will open displaying the EPUB file name and a "Open in Stanza" button.
Click the "Open in Stanza" button.
Stanza will open and the EPUB will be downloaded.
Select the book cover icon to open it.

Reading EPUB files in Stanza on your Apple iPad

To download our EPUB files using Stanza:
Install the Stanza application
Open Stanza
Select the "Get Books" button at the bottom of the screen
Select the "Shared" button at the top of the screen
Select the "Edit" button in the upper right of the screen
Select the "Add Book Source" option
Enter a name such as Connexions
Enter the URL to the repository such as cnx.org
Choose the "Web Page" option and select "Save"
Connexions will now be part of the "Get Books" option and the internal web browser will allow you to navigate to the EPUB you wish to download.
Once you are at the link to the EPUB file, select the link and the EPUB will be downloaded into Stanza.

Install the Stanza application
Open Safari

How do I open ZIP files?

If you are downloading an ebook (or ebook customization package) in ZIP format, you'll need to have a copy of WinZip to open the file. You can download a free version of WinZip. Once you've downloaded the ZIP file, double-click the icon to open it. Select all the files in the WinZip window and click 'Extract'. Choose a folder to extract the file(s) to. Go to that folder on your PC and double-click the icon to open the file.

Reading EPUB files in Stanza on your Apple iPhone or iPod Touch

To download our EPUB files using Stanza:
Install the Stanza application
Open Stanza
Select the "Get Books" button at the bottom of the screen
Select the Edit button in the upper right-hand corner
Select the "Add Book Source" option
Choose the "Web Page" button located under the URL text field
Enter a name such as Connexions
Enter the URL to the repository such as cnx.org
Select the "Save" button
Connexions will now be part of the "Get Books" option and the internal web browser will allow you to navigate to the EPUB you wish to download.
Once you are at the link to the EPUB file, select the link and the EPUB will be downloaded into Stanza.

If you are manually managing your content in iTunes

Download the EPUB file to your PC or Mac
How to download an EPUB
From the iTunes menu, go to "File", then "Add to Library..."
Navigate to the directory where the EPUB was downloaded.
Click open and the EPUB file is added to iTunes.
Select the "Books" listing in your library
Select and drag the desired EPUB to your device.
The content should be synced to the device.
